Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2024 Opening Night
Wexford Town Officially Opens Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann
Thousands of people have gathered for the opening day of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, held this year in Wexford town. During the official opening ceremony, President Michael D. Higgins remarked, “The Fleadh is a time when we can all come together welcoming so many visitors from around the world who have joined us to celebrate Irish music, dance and language.”
“Today as we gathered here in the heart of Wexford, we are not just opening another festival we are celebrating the beating heart of Ireland itself, our heritage and the spirit which binds us together” said George, Mayor of Wexford
When the festival began 73 years ago, it was against the backdrop of a decline in the popularity of traditional Irish music. Just a few hundred people attended in the early years, but it is now the world’s largest annual celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance.
Last year’s event in Mullingar was deemed a huge success, for 2024 Wexford County Council and over 1,500 volunteers are promising that this year’s Fleadh will “The best one yet”.
